Innovative battery programs benefit all customers, strengthening grids and increasing resilience while reducing costs and carbon emissions.
Vermont Business Magazine During the recent heat wave that saw temperatures soar in many parts of Vermont and New England in the ’90s, Green Mountain Power (GMP) partnered with customers to leverage innovative storage initiatives to reduce peak energy costs. and carbon footprint while helping customers stay comfortable in hot weather.
While peaking in New England last week, GMP’s pioneering and growing network of home batteries has saved customers about $1.2 million in costs while reducing energy demands during extreme heat.
By returning this stored energy to the grid, GMP saved customers silver by not having to purchase additional electricity from the local grid during peak times when electricity is most expensive. GMP’s customers did not have to cut back on their energy consumption during this period. They had unlimited use of the energy they needed to stay comfortable and safe in the heat.
GMP leverages all the innovative devices we have introduced for our customers, including home batteries, grid-scale batteries for solar power plants, and carbon reduction devices such as smart chargers for cars. All of this, combined with local renewable energy, equates to power outages for about 50,000 homes during peak hours.
GMP President and CEO Mari McClure said: “We are working with our customers to directly offset local costs while providing the resilience of critical homes and communities that are climate-ready.”
GMP’s industry-leading battery program has already saved customers $3 million annually over the last few years. Also, Vermont continues to experience extreme weather due to climate change, so batteries will continue to be essential. GMP is also working on various resilience and system strengthening projects as part of its proactive climate planning. This work will help communities prepare for an increase in severe storms. Storage under GMP programs also helps create a more flexible grid that allows for more local renewable energy.
“I love being part of the GMP Energy Storage Program because it helps everyone. It helps me stay active during storms and it helps my neighbors and friends all year round.” said Lorrie Byrom, a GMP client in Pittsford. “On those hot days, we want to know that batteries are back on the grid, reducing demand and reducing costs. is bringing you »
GMP is the first utility in the country to offer its customers a comprehensive, regulatory-approved home battery program. Attendees get discounts on home energy storage that provides seamless back-up power during storms. Customer agrees to share the stored energy with all customers during power surges. GMP programs include Bring Your Own Device (BYOD), Enphase and Powerwall programs, and GMP works with commercial customers on custom battery solutions for enterprises.
