Located in the former Phillips 66 gas station, a unique new business has started in Caswell County. It’s a small business run by a woman named Milton 66. “Beer garden” is derived from the German word “beer garden”. The company’s brewing concept is to sell artisan-made beers primarily from North Carolina and surrounding areas. The garden part of the concept not only sells, but also decorates the inside and outside of the store with seasonal flowers and plants.
Owned by Hosanna Blanchard, Burton Edwards and Nancy Keeler. Nancy and Hosanna are childhood friends. Burton is a professional gardener. Hosanna and Burton became friends through their mutual love of recycling old and found objects. Together they own the Carolina Vintage Antique Store in Milton’s commercial district. A business that will continue. When asked how the concept of the business started, Hossana said: She was at our (vintage) store and we started talking about Milton. I will talk about coffee later. We immediately talked about the garden center. We continued the conversation and eventually decided to get serious about starting a business together after the holidays. We just wanted to do something… We kept talking about different business ideas and what we could do with some empty buildings.
He continued, “Nancy’s (business) experience, my factory experience, and yours (Hosanna’s) experience gave me confidence that we could make it work.” It’s a great combination strategically placed on a lake (Hyco), near the runway (VIR) and on a busy road,” Hosanna added. But when they took possession of their newly purchased building, Hosanna said. We will never forget the first day we came here. There was water on the floor and the ceiling was falling. But we were able to see the skeleton of the place and really liked the industrial feel of an old gas station. ”
Bouton added: (We felt so.) It had to be something. This building is in the middle of town for everyone to see. There is also another empty building (Milton) that needs to be saved. Hosanna continues: Activate your energy. It needs people or projects to activate it. And it seems that there are many people in this neighborhood who are renovating their homes. Placemaking, that’s all. We take pride in where you live and want to improve it.
Coming up with a company name was the easiest part of the process. They respected the building’s past history and wanted to update it at the same time. Therefore, these new business partners wanted to keep the old gas station names and update them by adding city names and company descriptions. Hence the name Milton 66 Beer Garden. Going forward, these owners are committed to serving their communities. I pledged to donate half of my chips to a local charity every month. Additionally, the facility is a family-run business that serves light meals and offers board games that appeal to both children and adults.
